How to Create Coloring Book Pages with Midjourney

With this general formula!

Coloring books offer a wonderful way to relieve stress and enjoy creative moments. They are loved by both kids and adults alike.

Today, I’m going to share a general formula I’ve developed through countless coloring book prompts.

Prompt Formula

The formula I use is: FOR WHO + CHARACTER + ARTISTIC TECHNIQUES + THINGS NOT INCLUDED.

Here are some common keywords for each component. Remember, there’s no strict pattern for the CHARACTER.

FOR WHO

Single choice:

  • coloring page for kids
  • coloring page for adults
  • extremely simple coloring page for kids
  • a simple coloring page for a 5-year-old child
  • kids’ coloring book

Artistic Techniques

Multiple choice:

  • extreme simple line drawing
  • simple background
  • minimalistic
  • crisp lines
  • net lines
  • outline no color fill frame
  • simple detail
  • anthropomorphic doodle

Things Not Included

Multiple choice:

  • no shading
  • no fill
  • no color
  • no detail

Here’s a closer look at various artistic techniques used in creating coloring books:

Artistic Techniques

Extreme Simple Line Drawing

This technique focuses on minimalist and clean lines, emphasizing simplicity and clarity. It is often associated with Minimalism from the 1960s and is common in graphic design, illustration, and modern art.

Simple Background

A simple background adds minimal distraction, keeping the focus on the main subject.

Minimalistic

Minimalism is characterized by simplicity, using a few elements for maximum effect.

Crisp Lines

Crisp lines ensure the drawing is clear and easy to color.

Net Lines

Net lines provide a structured, grid-like appearance to the drawing.

Outline No Color Fill Frame

This technique adds a border to the coloring page without filling the interior with color.

Simple Detail

Simple details can reduce the complexity of line drawings, making them suitable for children’s coloring books.

Anthropomorphic Doodle

This refers to whimsical drawings where animals, objects, or abstract forms are given human characteristics. It is popular in children’s literature and modern illustration.

Combining Techniques

Let’s combine various techniques to create a coloring page for a 5-year-old child:

A simple coloring page for a 5-year-old child, a cute bear, simple detail, clean thick lines, outline no color fill frame, extreme simple line drawing, simple garden background

We see that the image above is already very cute, but the shadows are too heavy, and there is still too much detail for a child. At this point, we need to use ‘THINGS NOT INCLUDED’ to exclude certain elements. Let’s try adding it to the prompt and the parameter --no respectively and see how it looks in Midjourney.

Original Prompt:

A simple coloring page for a 5-year-old child, a cute bear, simple detail, clean thick lines, outline no color fill frame, extreme simple line drawing, simple garden background

Refined Prompt 1:

A simple colouring page for a 5-year old child, a cute bear, simple detail, clean thick lines, outline no color fill frame, extreme simple line drawing, no shading, no detail, simple garden background

Refined Prompt 2:

A simple colouring page for a 5-year old child, a cute bear, simple detail, clean thick lines, outline no color fill frame, extreme simple line drawing, simple garden background — no detail, shadows

By comparing the results, we find that Midjourney better understands and executes the desired style when the --no requirement is included in the parameter.

By comparing the results, it’s clear that placing the ‘no’ requirement in the parameter helps Midjourney better understand the prompt.

These keywords are essential for creating customized coloring pages. Mastering these is just the beginning; continue experimenting with different combinations to achieve your desired results. For efficient experimentation, consider templating these formulas using Notion.

Happy coloring!
